Deep Dive: Madagascar Centella Probio-Cica Glow Sun Ampoule – Protecting your Skin and your Microbiome
Skin1004 Madagascar Centella Probio-Cica Glow Sun Ampoule Review
Looking for a sunscreen that gives you SPF+50/PA ++++ all day protection, along with nourishing centella extract to prevent breakouts along with healing probiotics to deeply repair your skin barrier and give you stronger, better skin each use? They said it couldn’t be done – but after 3 years, I’ve found a new favorite sunscreen.
After years of loving, buying only Beauty of Joseon for months and shunning all other sunscreens (because how could they compare) - I’ve become distracted. Beauty of Joseon is a perfect, lightweight and cast-less sunscreen that contains fermented rice for probiotics and brighter skin. But the new Probio-Cica Glow Sun Ampoule also has probiotics! Fermenting their world-famous Madagascar centella asciatica has yielded a Lactobacillus mix that colonizes and balances your skin biome (especially if you’ve damaged it with various products over the years).
What's in the Bottle?
Centella asciatica extract/Lactobacillus ferment: No Skin1004 product would be complete without its signature Centella asciatica. This has been fermented specifically with Lactobacillus species to create a soothing, hydrating and probiotic-fueled element that helps soak and refresh your skin barrier.
Lactobacillus are friendly bacteria that actually help disable and eat bacteria that may be looking to invade – so adding this to your biome actually helps both calm skin, enhance your skin barrier and kick away outsiders.
Ceramides: these are hydrating fatty acids that are a core part of our natural skin barrier. Adding them to our skincare allows cracks or damage in our skin barrier wall to be filled and replenished – sealing in moisture and reducing irritation.
Phytosphingosine: lipid structure that holds cell barrier together, reduces inflammation and seals moisture in skin barrier.
Panthenol: nourishing Vitamin B5, which is protective to the skin barrier, hydrates and improves skin elasticity.
With background notes of aloe vera to soothe and viola flower extract for antioxidants – this serum is lightweight, refreshing and designed to meld with your natural skin biome.
Chemical Sunscreens: Ethylhexyl Triazone, Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine, Terephthalylidene Dicamphor Sulfonic Acid
When to Avoid?
It’s honestly a mild, high-cover sunscreen that is safe for all skin types and balances dry skin, sensitive skin and ideal for oily or combination skin.
If you have very dry, flaky skin – you may need something a tad more moisturizing. Although this ampoule is so perfect for my combination/oily skin, I can't predict how it may lie on dryer skin.
It's also got niacinamide in it – so if you are sensitive to niacinamide, you might want to give this one a miss.
What are the Results?
I added this sunscreen to my routine every morning, at the end of my skincare routine. It has an easy applicator tip so you can add it directly to your face (although this does make it harder to control how much you are applying). It absorbed immediately, leaving no white cast at all and actually left a deep, silver shine that dried after an hour. My face felt immediately moisturized, soft and I completely forgot I was wearing sunscreen.
I also trialed it underneath make-up, with Missha’s BB cream foundation over the top and it created a soft, satin finish. It didn’t pill at all during the day, maintained great coverage and was a great blend.
Over the two weeks of using it, I also had no breakouts, irritation or redness. It was really nice (buttery soft) to apply and I found myself using sunscreen everyday with delight, instead of having to remind myself.
If you don’t like having a too shiny face, it does apply wet and look glowy – but after some time dries nicely to where my normally oily face actually looks slightly matte. If you are a fan of the Beauty of Joseon Rice+Probiotics sunscreen - this is a delightful addition you are sure to love too! It has a similar texture, but absorbs far quicker and feels more moisturizing - whilst having even less of a white cast and lighter feel.
Final Thoughts
This is a fantastic sunscreen – if you have oily or combination skin, I’d personally recommend you have a try, especially if you normally breakout due to sunscreens or topicals. It feels nourishing, is soft to apply and wears so well during the day. If you are looking for a holistic, skin-barrier protecting sunscreen that also gives you great SPF protection – this is the first one I’d recommend.
