The Lightest, Cooling Moisturizer Made of Oats | Purito Seoul Oat In Calming Gel Cream Review
Purito Seoul is a K-beauty brand that specializes in soothing, hydrating skincare. Their name comes from the thought of ‘Pure’ (or ‘Puri’) and ‘To’ coming from the Chinese Hanzi for Earth. Giving them the name of Pure Earth, Purito Seoul prides themselves on sourcing and utilizing fresh, natural ingredients and creating simple and sensitive-skin friendly ingredients for a quality finish. They are the most famous for their Mighty Bamboo Panthenol cream – which combines the deep hydration of bamboo extract with the soothing and nourishing power of vitamin B5 (panthenol). It became a favourite moisturizer for oily and combination skin, due to its lightweight and balancing formula.
While the Mighty Bamboo has become a deep staple of Korean skincare, Purito introduced their new Oat-In Calming Gel Cream for a deeper hydration and calming of irritated skin. It came with a lighter, almost watery-gel formula that locks in moisture and most importantly – contains oat water. Why oat water? If you had a childhood chicken pox or rash as a child, maybe your parents made an oat mixture and covered your spots in it. It’s been a long-time, millennia-old human remedy to help soothe irritated, itchy and red skin – and there’s a good reason for that. It works!
Oat extracts boost natural skin hydration and are rich in ‘avenanthramides’ - which are awesome molecules that calm your immune system, reducing redness and irritation – whilst also boosts skin healing to balance skin. Oat extracts also help boost healthy skin bacteria – which is vital to help prevent acne outbreaks. There are good bacteria that help protect our skin from invaders (probiotics) and oats help feed these good bacteria for a stronger skin barrier that helps permanently fix dry spots, itching and damaged skin.
So, in summary – oat extract helps calm inflammation, moisturizes skin, permanently helps repair your skin barrier with pH balancing, enriching antioxidants and improving your skin microbiome. It’s perfect for damaged and irritated skin – so does Purito Seoul do it justice? Let’s test it!
What's in the Bottle?
Oat Seed Water (77%): forms the calming base of this gel cream – rich in molecules that helps calm and strengthen your skin barrier for permanently stronger, calmer and clearer skin.
Hydroxyacetophenone: rich in antioxidants, helps prevent melanin formation to lift dark spots and create an even skin tone (whilst protecting skin barrier against UV radiation).
Panthenol: soothing vitamin B5 that helps nourish and hydrate skin barrier to strengthen and protect skin.
Beta-Glucan: richly hydrating and nourishing molecule that helps seal the skin barrier for a deeper, long-lasting moisture.
This is not the entire ingredient list, of course – but the rest are standard conditioning agents (butylene glycol), hydrating (glycerin) and solvents that help stabilize the gel cream and ensure it adheres well to skin. Essentially, this is a very simple formula designed to make its star (oat seed water) shine and absorb well, with minimal extracts to reduce a chance of irritation.
Who Should Avoid?
This gel cream is dutifully designed to be light (safe for oily skin) as well as hydrating (good for dry skin) with pure calming oats in the interim. It’s not likely at all to cause irritation and is safe for most skin types. It does contain ‘butylene glycol’ which can be irritating to specific users who have an allergy. Otherwise, it’s safe for all skin types, including acne-prone and fungal acne users.
The Results
I have normal, but sensitive skin type (not really oily or dry), but a good moisturizer should be a part of every routine to prevent daily water loss. It’s important to prevent fine lines forming and skin dehydration – so having a nice hydrating product is a good staple to have in your routine. I can easily experience itching and redness to a variety of products – so picking simple and hydrating products is key. I was looking for a product to help cap my evening routine that would help seal in moisture, improve skin texture and prevent dehydration.
This gel cream is impossibly light and watery – almost less like a gel and just a step above an emulsion. It was so light and absorbs instantly into skin. After applying, my face was literally dry to the touch within a minute, making it very easy to layer and hydrate. Despite being so light, the hydrating effect is clear – it helps relieve dryness and itchiness overnight and improved my skin texture (creating clearer, softer skin in just two weeks of use).
Here’s the before and after of use – and you can see minute changes to my skin texture and how calm it felt. It has no scent to it and no unnatural fragrance - making it a soothing application. It was genuinely really nice product to cap a routine. It was non-irritating to broken and irritated skin and is a universally great moisturizer for most skin types. I would especially recommend it for sensitive or irritated skin types.
Final Thoughts
This gel cream is a universally quality moisturizer – for oily and dry skin types alike. I’d really recommend it for sensitive and high-irritation skin types, as you are most likely to benefit from this simple and elegant formula over other potentially irritating moisturizers. Its hydration is deep, rather than creating a cloying feeling on the surface and it absorbs incredibly well to prevent an oily, shiny finish.
