What's Your Lip Colour? - How to Co-Ordinate Your Look and Grab the Perfect Pop of Colour

Ever picked a new lipstick color and been disappointed when it just didn't suit you? Never again - learn the top colors that will always suit your look with our guide to lip colours/tints.

What Season are You?

If you've been scouting our previous make-up blogs, you'll hear us talking on and on about seasons. Simply put, seasons are a way to better co-ordinate your colour choices to elevate your entire look to match and suit your facial features. It divides the general population into warm seasons (spring, autumn) and cool seasons (summer, winter).

These seasons are broken down further into contrasting (bold!) and complementary features. There are some looks where you need contrast to make all your features pop (matching dark eyes with dark colours) and others where the colour should softly complement features to avoid drawing focus (matching light hair with light colours).

Winter type makeup season - cool tone, bold features
Summer type makeup season - cool tone, soft features
Spring type makeup season - warm tone, soft features
Autumn type makeup season - warm tone, bold features

Winter Type - Best Lip Colors

If you have cool tones and striking features - you are likely a winter type. This commonly comes with dark features; dark hair and dark eyes that have the energy to compete and balance out rich colours

You will want to avoid overly warm tones (think light oranges or pinks), but don’t be afraid to play with cooler pinks (think bluey-purples and icy-pinks) as these will give your look a boost without washing you out. You don’t want an overly sweet pink, however, as this can make your skin appear paler or off tone.

Summer Type - Best Lip Colors

If you have cool tones, but more baby-soft features- light hair, lighter eyes - you are likely a summer type. You need cool toned lipsticks, but any strong pigments can imbalance your face. You require floral hues and soft pigment.

For heavier make-up, don't be afraid to go for darker reds and bolder colours, but if you are going for a soft look for the day - make sure to pick a cool-toned pink or beige to ensure your face is not imbalanced.

Autumn Type - Best Lip Colors

If you have warm tones and striking features- you are likely an autumn type. Dark hair, eyes or strong eyebrows - you will benefit from deep, warm colours. Anything with earthy depth and strong quality will suit

In autumn types - warm tones gives you access to a variety of earthy shades that will suit; from deep reds to amber terracottas that will help highlight your natural tone. Do avoid artificial cool tones - such as cool pinks or purples as this will clash.

Spring Type - Best Lip Colors

If you have warm tones and softer features- you are likely a spring type. With honey toned features, but softer hair and lighter eyes - you are more likely to benefit from matching lip tones that match you.

Similar to autumn, you are best suited to warm tones – although softer. Try for warm fruits, such as peach, strawberry, tangerine and apricot. Don’t be afraid of a popping red, but just ensure it is balanced by the rest of your makeup for a bright look.

If you are having trouble picking your tone – check out our foundation post, which explores a few ways to check. If you are still feeling a bit confused about your season – worry not! It's generally a guide to follow. It’s simply to simplify color-matching, to help you feel coordinated and comfortable with your choices. If you are going for a bold look and are wearing matching colors – a bold lip will generally go with your look regardless of your season.

But for day-to-day choices that will prop you up and have you feeling cute with almost no co-ordination, follow these rules and have your staples that keep you popping every week.
