How to Do Autumn Make-Up – Glowing in Fall Colours
In Australia, it’s starting to cool off as we say goodbye to summer. The leaves are starting to turn and the weather is ready for cute sweaters, scarves and fun boots. It’s time to bring out your glow in the best way and get ready to have fun with warm drinks and gatherings at the local cafe. Yes, winter is on the way – but we have 3 months to enjoy our looks, have fun with colours and spend time with those we cherish.
How to Prep Your Skin for Autumn
If you are following the K-beauty mantra for make-up, skincare is a massive (and often inseparable) part of it. For autumn as the air gets dryer, it’s important to make sure you have some nourishing and hydrating products in your routine. If you are an oily skin type, be sure to have a gentle exfoliator in your routine and pair it up with some hydrating elements (such as bamboo, rice extract, hyaluronic acid or panthenol). If you are struggling with dry skin, get yourself a really deep overnight cream – keeping an eye out for rich ingredients such as ceramides, shea butter or allantoin.
Autumn Base Makeup Colours
For toning up your skin, autumn weather is cool enough to start layering foundation well and creating creamy, smooth textures. You can pick a blush colour or a highlighter (as per your preference):
Blush colours – peach, warm apricot, coral, dusky rose or bronze
Highlighter colours – champagne, light golds, soft rose-gold
The key is to pick one or two complementing colours that blend well together, try not to pick a sharp blush and contrast it with an opposing highlighter as you’ll end up feeling less cohesion in your look. Match warm soft colours (such as peach and rose-gold) or pick cooler colours that blend well together (such as cool pinks and champagne).
Eye-Shadow Colours for Autumn
Extend your warm/cool colour choice to your eye-shadow palette. You can pick a variety of colours for your eye shadow, but be sure they complement your base colours:
Warm colours: warm browns, bronze, copper, mustard yellow
Cool colours: Olive green, cool browns, charcoal
You can pick up a palette that makes blending easy and gives a few complementing colours and pick a brighter highlighting colour for the inner eyelid and extend out to a darker, contrasting colour for the outer eyelid.
Here are a few of our favourite palettes for this autumn:
Autumn Eyeliner and Brows
In terms of eyeliner, most looks are soft and warm – smudged and gentle. If you love a good wing (and know you look good) don’t feel like you have to take them down just to follow the trends. But if you are curious as to what’s “in” for autumn, it’s often a light bronze/brown line that is then blended into the eyelid above.
Natural, full brows are in style (however long that may last), so embrace a little eyebrow tint and styling. Never pluck or disturb your natural shape too much; the goal should be pure symmetry. Always add tint in a gently upward motion and try not to go over the darkness of your natural eyelashes (to avoid the over-tinted, unnatural appearance).
Autumn Shades for Lip
If you’re going for a dramatic eye and eyebrow tint, match the energy with a dramatic lip. Autumn looks are the perfect time for a bold, fun lip tint – just be sure to match up your eyeshadow for a cohesive, perfect look.
Warm colours: Terracotta, spiced brown, brick red, berry
Cool colours: matte brown, cool brown, Bordeaux
Here are a few of our favourite K-beauty tints that are high-quality and will have you looking perfectly ready for a warm, spiced latte:
No matter how you like your autumn colours, it’s the perfect time to brush off your old palettes and get those warm, bright and bronze shades back into rotation. The key to a great autumn look is complementary colours (keep cool and warm colours separate) and blend well.
