Celimax Vita-A Retinol Shot Serum Review: Better Than the Booster Shot?
Celimax Vita-A Retinol Shot Tightening Serum Honest Review
Celimax has made some legendary skincare over the years; from their soothing Dual Barrier range to their soothing toner pads. They’ve created an impact on the K-beauty world with scientifically researched and backed products that become beloved long-term members of various skincare routines. But, they’ve always struggled to make enough products to meet global demand – so when one of their products hits the worldwide market and is a hit, they often run out. This is what’s been happening to the Celimax Vita-A Retinal Shot Tightening Booster – a lightweight cream made of skin-renewing retinal that showed amazing promise as an eye-cream and fine line serum. After months of it being out of stock, we started looking for our retinol fix to come from somewhere else.
And we almost forget, the booster serum never came alone. It has a younger brother, in the form of a more gentle and soothing retinol formula. The Celimax Vita-A Retinol Shot Tightening Serum comes with double the size, a more lightweight formula that is more gentle on the skin and can be used all over for firmer, fresher skin.
Although using retinol instead of retinal means it isn’t as strong, but it is far kinder and gentle to your skin barrier. This serum is also enriched with soothing panthenol (in place of niacinamide) and a variety of gentle, boosting peptides – which makes this serum a great firming and fine line lifting formula that is more kind to your skin. Formula, however is one thing. Is this serum as good as the booster shot? Out of options, but optimistic – let's test out the effect of this serum on your skin barrier.
What's in the Bottle?
Panthenol: deeply soothing and moisturizing vitamin B5, that is perfect to help repair the skin barrier and strengthen skin cells.
Hydrolyzed sponge: microscopic needles extracted from marine sponges that improve skin absorption by up to 200%, whilst also stimulating natural collagen formation and improving skin texture.
Sunflower Oil: rich in healthy fatty acids to support and improve your skin barrier, whilst providing natural hydration to soften and protect skin against irritation.
Tocopherol (Vitamin E): natural antioxidant that helps enrich and protect skin against damage, especially environmental and UV damage. Gentle and soothing.
Retinol (0.1%): improves cell barrier turnover, increasing skin shedding to improve both acne, blemishes and fine lines by revealing more youthful, fresh skin underneath. An all-round effective treatment for a variety of skin conditions.
Carrot Root Extract: vitamin-rich extract that helps boost skin barrier and protect against UV damage and oxidative stress. Helps soothe and boost natural glow.
8 Peptide Complex (including Tripeptide-1/Palmitoyl-Tripetide-1/Copper Tripeptide-1): signals to skin cells to produce more collagen, for a natural plumping and boosting effect. Improves cell function and immunity.
Acetyl Hexapeptide-8: reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, by reducing muscle tension for a smoother face and improving natural hydration.
Who Should Avoid?
This serum contains spicules (little microscopic needles) to help boost natural skincare absorption. This is great for ingredients that you want to deeply absorb (such as collagen, peptides and PDRN), but can irritate a damaged or sensitive skin barrier. With high panthenol and Vitamin E, this serum is one of the more sensitive-skin friendly spicule serums on the market, but do avoid if you are using other spicule serums, when using a device or on any skin barrier with open wounds or irritation.
The Results
I picked up this serum to help with hydration, fine lines and boost my natural skin barrier. I have a sensitive skin type – which can be reactive to specific plant extracts or abrasive soaps (but otherwise pretty happy with a variety of skincare products). This serum is very lightweight and liquid, absorbing quickly and easily on application. You can feel the little needles when you apply, but they are not painful and more reminiscent of a light tingling. This serum is actually quite hydrating for a spicule serum and showed no signs of redness and irritation (which can happen with higher dose spicule formulas). The higher levels of panthenol must have kept my skin barrier calm and smooth.
After two weeks of use, I feel like I could appreciate an improvement in my general hydration and appearance of fine lines. Using this serum as the first step in my routine (after cleansing), ensured that all my other skincare products absorbed more too, which improved my skin texture, glow and daily hydration. The bottle was still about half-full, despite using everyday and there was limited irritation (which was a great bonus!)
I would absolutely recommend this serum if you are looking for a boost, either for dullness or fine lines. With a rich variety of peptides and refreshing retinol, this serum is a high quality addition to boost skin firmness, fine lines and improve natural hydration. It’s gentle enough for most skin types and lightweight, making it perfect for use under a variety of skincare products.
Vita-A Tightening Boost Shot Comparison
It is a more gentle formulation, when compared to the tightening shot booster. With a thinner formula, it absorbs quicker, but it does have a less dramatic effect. If you are looking for a serum which will improve texture, boost hydration and improve collagen all over - this is a better choice than the booster shot (which needs to be used with more care for risk of retinol burns).
The tightening shot booster is still the better choice if you are looking for a dramatic lift to fine lines (especially eye lines), but if you are happier with slower, more stable changes this serum is a great addition for more holistic aged-skincare.
Celimax Retinol Serum vs Booster Shot
- The Celimax Vita-A Retinol Serum is designed to be lightweight, used for the whole face and creates a gentle improvement to skin texture, hydration and reduces uneven textures.
- The Celimax Vita-A Tightening Booster Shot is designed as a fine-line spot treatment that delivers high-dose spicules and retinal to target areas for rapid improvement of fine lines (such as eyes, mouth and forehead).
Final Thoughts
If you are after a serum that boosts your hydration, helps tighten and refresh your skin barrier whilst improving the absorption of other skincare products - this serum is a great all-round addition that soothes, gives microneedling effect and infuses rich compounds to hydrate (with that retinol kick of course!)
It's less dramatic than a high-concentration retinol solution, but if you are looking for boosting peptides, a comfortable level of retinol and microneedling in a bottle - this is a fantastic choice for daily use.

FAQs - Celimax The Vita-A Retinol Shot Tightening Serum
Is Celimax Vita-A Retinol Shot Serum Good for Sensitive Skin?
Yes, this serum is designed to be a softer and more hydrating alternative to Celimax's powerful Vita-A Tightening Booster Shot. In place of high-dose retinal, this carefully formulated serum uses 0.1% retinol, infused with hydrating panthenol, vitamin E and plumping peptides. It's a genuinely gentle formation which gives your skin improvement without irritation.
Can Beginners Use The Celimax Vita-A Retinol Shot Serum?
Yes, this serum is gentle, easy-to-use and rich in a variety of ingredients that make it beneficial to a beginners routine. It's best used in an evening routine (PM) and should be started every second day, before slowly increasing to every-day use. You should see an improvement to fine lines, hydration and firmer skin.
What Products Should be Used With The Celimax Vita-A Retinol Shot Serum?
This serum is perfectly designed to hydrate and firm skin, but is incredibly beneficial to follow with a rich, hydrating moisturizer. It helps form a protective barrier, keeps moisture inside the skin and helps you wake up with a more radiant glow.
Does the Celimax Vita-A Retinol Shot Serum cause Purging or Irritation?
This serum is not suited for oily and acne-prone skin, as its purpose is to provide deep hydration and relieve fine lines. It shouldn't cause purging unless used in a thick layer (but is still not highly beneficial for acne-prone skin). It is designed with low dose retinol, so the chance of irritation is very rare - but always start with a spot test and slowly introduce it to your routine.
