Exfoliators FAQs
Is Exfoliation Good For Your Skin?
Yes, exfoliation is an important part of the cleaning process for skin. Especially for fine lines and acne-prone or oily skin, exfoliation helps with improving cell turnover for more radiant, even skin texture. Acne breakouts are often caused by clogged pores and a common cause of this is excess oils or build-up of dead skin cells. Exfoliation helps remove this excess for clearer, softer and balanced skin. For fine lines, exfoliation helps reduce dull, dead skin cells and helps moisturizers penetrate skin better for radiance and hydration.
How To Exfoliate Your Skin?
There’s a variety of methods to exfoliate, which mostly fall into mechanical or chemical. Mechanical is easy to do on the go and its an important part of cleansing. This is gently scrubbing away dead skin cells and can be done with a cellulose cleanser (small particles that scrub during a normal face wash) or with a face towel or toning pad. Gently scrub in small circles to disrupt dead skin cells and refresh skin. You can also exfoliate with enzymatic acids (such as AHA, BHA, PHA or LHA) which help melt away oils and sebum for a balanced, refreshed appearance.
How Often Do You Exfoliate?
Exfoliation is most standardly done once or twice a week. How often you should exfoliate depends on your skintype and also how aggressive your exfoliation technique. For something as strong as a chemical peel, even for oily skin you shouldn’t need to exfoliate more than one a week or fortnight. For more gentle methods, such as a light scrub with a face towel, you can perform daily for oily skin. If you have dry skin, once or twice a week for gentle exfoliation will be plenty to boost natural glow without drying out your microbiome.
