The Beauty of Biodance – Science-Backed Skincare

Established 5 years ago, Biodance started in 2021 with hypoallergenic, soothing products that are designed for gentle skincare that delivers rich results. With a focus on natural ingredients that are innovative and exciting, these products are dermatologist designed and approved for maximal benefit. It was created by Mihwa Kim, who was recovering from a car accident and suffered burns to her face. She wanted a soothing, healing mask that could help boost cell healing in a real, medical way. South Korea has strict standards for results and products don’t last long in the sphere if they don’t deliver visible changes to skin and Kim wanted to deliver the product she needed at the time. 

This led to her passionate endeavor to formulate a hydrogel mask with a difference; that could adhere to skin and infuse ingredients deeper than ever before. It had to be light, soothing and deliver visible benefit that the user could feel. 

So, why is hydrogel special? It’s used a ton in Korean beauty for a good reason. It is composed of polymers (usually extracted from seaweed) that holds water and ingredients really, really well. This allows it to fuse to the extracellular matrix of skin and infuse ingredients easily across the skin barrier. On its own, hydrogel can soothe skin, reduce redness and boost hydration – so adding ingredients on top of that, creates a deep boost to skin. Although it’s been around for 15 years, hydrogels are still only just finding their space in medicine and helping to heal wounds faster than ever before.

Biodance mask went viral due to its ability to ‘turn clear’ as the ingredients inside it absorbed into the skin. This created a visible difference than users could note and kick-started a whole train of hydrogel masks from every other K-beauty brand. But Biodance still holds the title as the best in Hydrogel mask fame, for their unique healing and plumping ability. It was the first to create ‘long wear’ hydrogel masks, that are designed to deliver treatment over a few hours and create a long-term treatment. 

It can’t just be the hydrogel masks alone, can it? Well, Biodance also has a claim to fame with their original use of very low molecular weight collagen. As we explored in our Collagen Blog, collagen is a large molecule and can’t be absorbed by the skin (normally 300,000 Da in size). Our skin can only absorb molecules less than 300Da – so formulating a ‘down-sized’ form of plumping collagen that can pass through the skin barrier and provide more ‘structure’ was a feat of strong engineering.

A fourth the size of ‘marine collagen’, very low molecular weight collagen provides a short-term “plumping” effect of skin, which helps lift fine lines and fill in trouble spots for smooth, glassy skin. They are ideal for an upcoming event, where you want to look timeless and glassy. 

Biodance has to infuse their hydrogel masks with something – and this comes in the form of their famous serums. These highly concentrated skin treatments are infused with thoughtful ingredients to deliver deep relief to irritated or damaged skin. From their deeply plumping Radiant Vita Niacinamide serum to their soothing Sea Kelp serum, these glassy serums are ideal for different skin types. However, they all succeed in bringing out a unique glow for different users.

The most beloved (by a good margin) is their Pore Perfecting Collagen Peptide serum. This rich serum is infused with 10 different peptides to boost collagen production within cells and smooth wrinkles, whilst having a rich boost of ginseng. It's their famous hydrogel mask distilled into serum form and is a deep favourite of Biodance lovers.

Their newest line is Biodance's foray into PDRN (matching the trends that are dominating K-Beauty). Designed for deep hydration, soothing and healing all rolled into one dynamic (and fun!) purple mask.
