How to Use Kojic Acid for Clearer Skin – Hyperpigmentation Solution?

What is Kojic acid? Can a fungal extract really help reduce dark spots and give you clearer, glowign skin? Find out how this single ingredient can revolutionize your skincare routine.

Kojic acid is a beloved ingredient in Korean beauty – for its natural origins, healing ability and brilliant effect on dark spots and pigment. It acts as an antioxidant, anti-bacteria, anti-inflammatory and helps eliminate tumor forming cells – so, what can’t it do? Is kojic acid safe for use? Is it useful in your own, personal routine? Let’s find out the science, how to use kojic acid and whether you’ll see benefits!

What is Kojic Acid?

Simply put, kojic acid is a molecule that is extracted from yeast. It’s produced by yeast under the right conditions, to help protect itself from environmental pollutants and invasive bacteria. Similar to its ability to protect the yeast, it creates a protective barrier for your skin and helps restore balance to your immune system. Where your skin can be overly irritated or reactive, kojic acid helps rebalance your immune cells and triggers them instead to redirect to clear up impurities from the skin and prevent over-activation

This means, if your skin tends to be overly inflamed or easily irritated, kojic acid can help return better balance to your skin biome. This will help prevent post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and is step one to helping keep your skin clear. But can preventing inflammation and inappropriate pigment deposition really help keep your skin clear? According to one small study – adding kojic acid to a base routine helped improve brightness of skin in 75% of testers and increased skin clarity in 67% of patients

How to Use Kojic Acid?

Kojic acid is a stable metabolite that helps improve UV protection, thus it’s ideally used in the early morning or AM routine for better protection against pigment. You’ll get the best benefits from using it early morning – as not only will it help keep your skin cool and clear, but also prevent new spots forming from sun exposure.

Kojic acid is used up to 1% in typical skincare (as there is really good safety data for this level of concentration). You can use it directly on skin after toning if dark spots are your main concern, for better penetration and protection. Follow it with a lightweight moisturizer or ampoule, then top with a refreshing sunscreen for good day protection.
PS: you aren’t going to treat your hyperpigmentation without a good daily sunscreen!
