Dr Melaxin TXA-Astaxanthin Overnight Wrapping Mask Review – Glassy Skincare ✨
Dr Melaxin has had a variety of new releases this season, with a focus on oily skin and pore care specifically. We’ve already reviewed their refreshing Cactox Balm, as a major step for daily care and reduction of pores, so they’re definitely onto something. So, it was exciting to check out their new TXA-Astaxanthin Overnight Wrapping Mask designed for oily and combination skin. This wrapping mask is a mimic of the April Skin wrapping mask, but it has a little something extra inside it. Astaxanthin! 🧬
What is Astaxanthin?
It’s a biomolecule containing powerful antioxidants, boosting skin healing and protection against environmental pollutants. It helps reduce skin inflammation and irritation and helps prevent fine line formation by preventing cell damage. It can firm and plump skin on contact and produces a temporary ‘glass’ effect with reduced pores and deeper hydration. It’s also a great way to balance oils and skin sebum.
Simply put, it's a really all-round skincare treatment for both fine lines and calming oily and acne-prone skin, whilst helping obtain the goal of glassy, poreless texture.
So, is this overnight able to deliver visible results? Is the combination of brightening TXA and niacinamide with smoothing/balancing astaxanthin worth it? Let's put it to the test to see if it's worth adding to your PM routine!
What's In The Bottle?
Niacinamide: brightening vitamin B3 that helps reduce appearance of dark spots and even skin texture, whilst giving a characteristic glow.
Vitamin E: gently hydrating and soothing antioxidant that helps improve moisture and heal spots, flaking and dry skin.
Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin): forms protective barrier for skin, helps reverse damage and has a powerful soothing, anti-inflammatory and healing effect. Gives skincare a bright pink glow.
Tranexamic acid: powerful brightening treatment that helps restore circulation to skin, improve clarity and reduce pigment and appearance of dark spots.
Sodium hyaluronate: powerful moisturizing agent that helps draw moisture into skin barrier and hold it, improving water retention and plumping of skin.
Resveratrol: helps stimulate collagen synthesis, improve regeneration, reduce appearance of dark spots and reduce wrinkle depth for smooth, repaired skin.
Glutathione: brightening agent that helps gentle lighten and even skin texture, whilst reducing skin cell stress and improving moisture retention.
Astaxanthin: powerful agent that helps improve fine lines and wrinkle depth, whilst evening skin texture and providing balance to oily skin.
Collagen extract: plumping and hydrating extract that helps seal moisture in overnight to produce firmer, glassy and vibrant skin texture.
Who Should Avoid?
This overnight wrapping mask has minimal ingredients and should be safe for a variety of skin types. It does, however, contain fragrance which can be irritating for sensitive skin.
It's most ideal for oily, combination and acne-prone skin that needs a little TLC and could be a little drying for dry skin types, so pick with care.
The Results
I always love a little fun in my skincare routine, but have used a few wrapping masks that can be a little irritating. I have sensitive and acne-prone skin, so occlusive face masks tend to trigger whiteheads and can't be used that often.
I was excited for a face mask that was more keyed to oily and combination skin, designed to hydrate and refresh, but also to balance sebum. It seemed too good to be true, but I dutifully trialed it out at the end of my evening (PM) routine.
After serums, treatments and a deep, gel moisturizer, I would add the mask layer on top and leave it to dry. It dries incredibly gently and doesn't create that tight, pulling feeling that some night masks do and you can genuinely sleep without realising it's there.
Once I woke up in the morning, it was a little dry and pinchy in places (which is to be expected from an 8hr night mask), but pulling it off revealed almost perfectly glassy skin. It massively reduced pores, improved absorption of my PM barrier cream and created plump, firm skin.
It's not something I would put on every night, but the night before a special occasion or to reduce pigment (and instill a bright glow), I would really recommend it!
Final Thoughts
If you are after an overnight wrapping mask specifically for oily skin, requiring a little dark spot care, balance or want a perfectly glassy finish - this is a great overnight mask. It doesn't trigger acne, infuses a variety of radiant vitamins overnight and is seriously a great step towards almost perfectly flawless glow when you wake up.
