Sunscreen FAQs
Are Korean Sunscreens safe?
Yes, Korean sunscreens are typically very safe for use and carefully researched when formulated. In South Korea, a large majority of the population wear sunscreen daily (almost double the number of people in Australia), but the risk of sun damage is lower in South Korea. In Australia, sun protection is a very serious deal and its important to pick a sunscreen that you trust and always wear coverage too (hats, long sleeves etc). It’s better to shop big brands that have proven SPF and reliable coverage, as well as taking care with sunscreen reformulations that are unproven.
How is SPF Calculated?
SPF is calculated the same way worldwide (although it's a rather strange way to quantify sun protection). Essentially volunteers are covered with a layer of the sunscreen and exposed to sunlight. The time it takes for the skin to turn red is quantified into SPF – which makes it unreliable as a quantification. This is why there’s often scandals where sunscreen SPFs are calculated incorrectly and leads to unreliability. It’s safer to shop big brands for sunscreen, always broad spectrum and the higher the SPF the better.
Is Chemical Sunscreen or Mineral Sunscreen Better?
This is complicated choice – which balances different safety considerations. Chemical sunscreens are newer formulas and they typically provide better and longer lasting protection. This is because they absorb into the skin and use complex molecules to reflect both UV A and B radiation for strong protection. Mineral sunscreens, on the other hand, have reduced efficacy as they form a topical, protective layer. This acts as a mirror that reflects away UV radiation, but can easily be broken (especially if not re-applied every 2 hours).
Some people prefer mineral sunscreen still, as some chemical sunscreen safety profiles have not been thoroughly tested (and a few are already banned due to failing significant safety tests!) Marketed chemical sunscreens in Australia are considered very safe (so don’t be afraid), but still mineral sunscreens are recommended for very young children and pregnant women (as well as always taking care to cover up and avoid prolonged sun exposure).
